Wedding of the Season Abandoned at the Altar The Abandoned At The Altar Series Laura Lee Guhrke 9780061963155 Books

I enjoy many of Guhrke's books, however, I had held off on purchasing books from this series - mostly based upon the overall star ratings. A couple of days ago, I decided to delve into this first book and I think I understand why more than 40% of the reviews are three stars and lower. Although to give the author credit, that also means that more than 50% are four stars and above.

I truly liked hero, Will, and to some extent understood why he made the decision to head off to Egypt six years previously even though he had loved Beatrix since they were very young and in fact was betrothed to her at the time he "abandoned" her. Fact of the matter is that he tried his best to get her to go with him to Egypt and she refused. Does that make him a jerk? Well, kind of, because Beatrix had no idea that he would be wanting her to give up her entire life and travel to Egypt at the time she promised to marry him? Fact is they were both young and he really "needed" the adventure. Times they were a'changing and although he's a duke, that way of life is going down the drain very quickly and Will knew he could not count on the estate and lands alone to make his living.

The book picks up after the six years have passed and Beatrix is now engaged to be married to a different duke (Aidan) - albeit a quite starchy, do everything right type of person which you may feel free to interpret as "boring." Sounds as though she needs stability in her life after being "abandoned." In fact, she carried a torch for Will for five of the six years, but finally gave up and decided she wanted children and a husband - therefore she accepted Aidan's proposal. Enter Will back into the mix because he's come home to drum up funds for the ongoing excavations taking place in Egypt after having spent 100,000 pounds of his own money. This lack of responsible spending sunk Will somewhat in my estimation.

Since Will has rich friends, he's going to take advantage of whatever opportunities are available to raise funds for continued exploration including his attendance at the annual house party at Pixy Cove hosted by the Marlowes whose story was written in And Then He Kissed Her (Girl Bachelors series Book 1). While there, Will becomes determined to do everything he can to win Beatrix's heart who is also in attendance. In fact, he's quite creative and of course we knew from the beginning that Beatrix's and Aidan's engagement would come to naught although I suspect that Aidan and Julia might get together at some point. I can see the two of them driving each other nuts being that she's a scandal in the making and he's the totally opposite - that should make for some serious fireworks.

So, there's all this back and forth between Will and Beatrix as to why he "abandoned" her and why she refused to go with him. In truth, I was somewhat sympathetic with Beatrix until I realized she was a scaredy cat and needed to let go of her fears. At any rate, the back and forth goes on ad nauseum until I just wanted it over. The romance was very sweet in some way, however, the ending was way too contrived. Three stars for this one.

Wedding of the Season Abandoned at the Altar The Abandoned At The Altar Series Laura Lee Guhrke 9780061963155 Books Reviews

I have to say that I do not agree with the bad reviews. This book was not the best, but it was not bad either. The hero leaving the heroine at the alter- is the source of the tension and there has to be tension between them or there is no story for me. Also, the hero spending his inheritance on the excavation I thought fit in with the time period and his station in life- so it did not bother me. Although, keep in mind, when I read a romance, no matter the genre, the most important things to me (besides character development and ability to write a decent paragraph) the hero has honor, the dialogue is entertaining and there is tension between the hero and heroine- If those are done well most other things I can forgive. This has all that- I liked the book.
Lady Beatrix Danbury and William Mallory, the Duke of Sunderland had been engaged once. Will, a budding archaeologist, unable to persuade Trix to go with him, left for Egypt to pursue his dreams of finding and excavating tombs of dead kings two weeks before their wedding. By the time he came back to visit England 6 years later, Beatrix was already engaged to another man.

Seeing each other again stirred up old feelings. Though both parties fought, denied and curbed their emotions, their love for each other is too strong to be left restrained. The torch they thought long ago dead was actually a banked ember put to rest, waiting to spark back to a roaring, blazing fire! They will reunite but the journey back to each other’s arms was quite eventful.

LLG took this story of second chance of love to another altitude. She gave a breath of fresh air to this old, crusty, well-trodden path of a storyline. Both sides had given their valid points why Trix wanted to stay in England and why Will had to go back to Egypt. The way they swing their arguments to one another was like watching an excellent match of a tennis game that as a reader, it doesn’t matter who persuades whom! I just wanted them to get back together!

And they did, oh, they did. It was sweet, timely and a riotous moment all at once. **sigh**

One more unique feature of this novel was the setting. It was at the turn of the 20th century, from 1896 to early 1900's. I was delightedly surprised to read about motor cars (driven by women, too), telegrams and few other modern amenities back in those days.

4.25 beaming, radiant stars!
William Mallory, Duke of Sunderland, had loved archaeology all his life and had no wish to be an idle aristocrat. Two weeks before his wedding, he was given a glorious opportunity to do something meaningful in his chosen profession, an important dig in Egypt.. Sad to say, he couldn't talk his fiancee into accompanying him, so he ended up going alone. No wedding.

Beatrix wanted the life she had always had. She couldn't be convinced that that life was dying even though her own brother had had to use his American heiress wife's money to prop up his own estate. I think Trix was unreasonable and I was entirely on Will's side.

Now, Will has returned and sparks fly between Will and Beatrix. Will is still unwilling to live the life of an aristocrat trying to hold together an estate that is barely paying its way. Trix remains intransigent.

These two had loved each other from childhood. There had never been a need for courtship and therein lay the problem. Will had never had to pursue Beatrix.....she was always there. Now he realizes she's no longer available and the serious pursuit and courtship begin.

Btw, I can't wait to read the story of two secondary characters, Aidan and Julia. He's upright and proper; she smokes cigarettes and drives fast cars!

Enjoy your reading! )
